Origin of Sardarji jokes

Indians by nature are a lazy breed. We want to get more by doing less. So we copy movie scripts, songs and what not. The Sardarji jokes are a direct take from the western Blond jokes or little Johny jokes. The jokes need to be something which we can identify with, that allows for replacing a “A Blond went to a doctor” with “A Sardarji went to a doctor”. But why only Sardarji jokes?

Why not name the jokes as “Tamilian Jokes”? If we look at Indian communities the most popular ones are Punjabi, Tamilian, Mallu, Bengali, Gujju, Haryanvi and Bihari. We don't hear about people from some states like Oriya and MP wallah(i don't even know what they are called). And there are Mallus jokes too, but they are not as popular as Sardarji jokes are. But Punjabi bhangra culture is there all over. All Bollywood movies have Punjabi characters and they are dominating the Hindi movies.

Santa and Banta have become essential characters in jokes. Not that Sardarjis are fools to start with. I have meet very intelligent Sardars. But they are cool people. They don't mind the jokes cracked on them. And if you have to identify someone's state/region identity Sardarji would be the easiest to start with. Therefore even the person with remotest idea of other Indians can connect with the plot of a Sardar going to a doctor. And there are old Indian jokes which tell about “Sardarji ke barah baaj gaye”. So whoever had the brilliant idea of converting all Blond jokes to Indian set ups chose the characters as Sardarjis.

But what would happen if we were to convert all the jokes to other characters. Say a Tamilian, people wont laugh then as a Tamilian is more often than not perceived as a dark rude man wearing lungi and refusing to co-operate with non-Tamilians(atleast in my part of the world). And don't even think of converting them to Bengali characters, may be the Left will withdraw support from the government and we wont be able to see any cricket matches in Eden Garden. And no not a Bihari character, these characters used to get all the roles of Ramu Kaka and other servants in old hindi movies. Bihari's are seen more as illiterate not as dumbs. Though there are some Laloo jokes doing rounds, which i don't find funny as Laloo is a clever politician.

PS- I have respect for all Indians(infact for all creatures on this earth).
